In cases of diverticulosis, drink plenty of fluids and increase the fiber in your diet. In cases of diverticulitis, antibiotics may be prescribed to clear up the infected diverticula and a liquid diet may be suggested. While the colon is healing, the doctor may recommend a low-fiber diet for a period of time. If attacks of diverticulitis are severe or frequent, surgery may be required.

Medications
Doctors often recommend over-the-counter fiber laxatives or stool softeners for relief of constipation associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Ask your doctor which is best for you. Doctors sometimes may prescribe an anti-spasmodic or other medications.
