Pharmacopoeias. In US.
The United States Pharmacopeia 31, 2008 (Polycarbophil). It is polyacrylic acid cross-linked with divinyl glycol. White to creamy-white granules, with a characteristic, ester-like odour. Swells in water to a range of volumes, depending primarily on the pH. Insoluble in water, in common organic solvents, and in dilute acids and alkalis. A 1 % mixture in water has a pH of not more than 4.0. Store in airtight containers.

Description. Liquorice is the dried rhizome and roots of Glycyrrhiza glabra. Those of Glycyrrhiza glabra var. typica are known in commerce as Spanish Liquorice, those of Glycyrrhiza glabra var. glandulifera as Russian Liquorice, and those of Glycyrrhiza glabra var. β-violacea as Persian Liquorice.

The United States Pharmacopeia 31, 2008 (Casanthranol). It is obtained from cascara. It contains not less than 20% of total hydroxyanthracene derivatives calculated on the dried basis, of which not less than 80% consists of cascarosides, both calculated as cascaroside A (C27H32014 = 580.5).
It is a light tan to brown, amorphous, hygroscopic powder. Freely soluble in water with some residue partially soluble in methyl alcohol and in hot isopropyl alcohol practically insoluble in acetone. Store in airtight containers at a temperature not exceeding 30°. Protect from light.
Profile
Casanthranol is an anthraquinone stimulant laxative with general properties similar to those of senna. It is given in usual oral doses of 30 to 60 mg daily with a faecal softener. In severe cases a dose of 90 mg daily, or 60 mg twice daily, may be given.

Description. Bran consists of the fibrous outer layers of cereal grains. It contains celluloses, polysaccharides or hemicelluloses, protein, fat, minerals, and moisture and may contain part of the germ or embryo. Bran provides water-insoluble fibre and, depending on the source, may also provide water-soluble fibre (see also Dietary Role, below).
